China has hit a Philippine Coast Guard vessel with water cannons in the South China Sea. The BBC’s South East Asia Correspondent Jonathan Head witnessed the confrontation on Tuesday morning near the Scarborough Shoal which is claimed by both countries.

There have been a growing number of clashes between coast guard ships from China and the Philippines in the South China Sea – particularly in the last year.

The Philippine government led by President Marcos Jr. has increased patrols to challenge the dominant Chinese presence in the disputed waters.
