Copa América official discharged from hospital after collapse

Humberto Panjoj, the assistant referee who collapsed midway through the first half of Tuesday’s Copa América Group A match between Canada and Peru, has been discharged from a local hospital and is “stable,” tournament organizers CONMEBOL said on Wednesday.

CONMEBOL added that Panjoj suffered from “dehydration” due to the hot and humid conditions at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City on Tuesday.

Panjoj went down just prior to the end of the first half, with Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau the first to arrive to provide aid.

Panjoj tried to continue, but was eventually stretchered off and replaced by the fifth official, Ricardo Fabián Baren Córdova, of Ecuador.

According to AccuWeather, the temperature in Kansas City was expected to reach a high of 93 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday, with a humidity of 53%.

Canada went onto win the game 1-0 with a second-half goal from Jonathan David after Peru had been reduced to 10 men following a red card for Miguel Araujo.
